Sync On Demand

$
0
0

Sync on Demand allows devices storing low-quality images (Thumbnails) to temporarily be shown a higher resolution version of the photo (Preview)without permanently taking up storage on their device.  Mylio will seamlessly sync a higher resolution version of a photo from a connected device when the file is viewed, and then cache the image for deletion when it is not being viewed.

For instance, if you are browsing photos on an iPad with low-quality images, while a computer with higher-quality images is connected, the higher-quality will automatically be sent to the iPad for viewing, and then removed from the iPad (cached) when navigated away from.

Turning on Sync on Demand

  • Navigate to Mylio’s Settings by selecting Settings from the View menu.
  • Select Sync.
  • Toggle on Sync on Demand.

The Mylio Dashboard

The Mylio Dashboard is your one view to fully understand everything about your Mylio Library. From your library’s media count to your device’s sync status, the Mylio Dashboard is full of fun and practical information to help you keep control of your growing photo library.

To access the Mylio Dashboard, simply select the Dashboard icon in the top right corner of Mylio.

The Dashboard icon will also display a red badge with a number on it when images need to sync to the device you’re using. This serves as a quick reminder that you have imported new photos on another device and should sync them when you have the time.

Parts of the Dashboard

The Mylio Dashboard is made up of many different panels. These panels include…

  • Devices – Your device list and their current sync status. To learn more about this panel see the Devices tab on this page.
  • People – Part of your Library Stats, this page shows you the people that make up your photo library and how many images you have of them.
  • Places – Part of your Library Stats, this page shows you the locations that make up your library and how many photos and videos were taken in each spot.
  • Keywords – Part of your Library stats, this page shows you the keywords that are used in your images.

Devices

Mylio’s Devices tab will show you important information about all of the devices registered to your Mylio account. This is an important page and can be used to view your devices, their sync status, and make changes to how they operate.

Let’s take a closer look.

  1. Add a new device with the plus sign in the top right corner of the Devices panel.
  2. The device you’re currently using is always listed at the top of the page.
  3. The icon in the circle will tell you what type of device it is. Whether a computer, a phone, or an external drive, Mylio will display that for reference here.
  4. The shield icon at the top right of a device dictates that this device is a Vault and will store all Originals and optimized versions to sync to other devices. A yellow shield shows that it needs to sync, or a white shield shows that it is in sync.
  5. The circle around the device shows how much space it has. This information is also shown in the device stats listed below the device.
  6. Selecting the device will open the Device Settings.
  7. The next section of the Devices list will show other Vaults on your Mylio account. Here, you can see:
    • The device type icon
    • The space used vs free space
    • The current status of the device
    • The last time the device was online
    • The device’s sync status
      • Selecting the Sync Status will show you which devices to turn on to receive the media to this device.
  8. The final section of the Devices panel will show you the non-Vault devices. This includes Auto-optimized devices and devices utilizing Selective Sync to set a specific Sync Policy. Much like the Other Vaults section, here you can see:
    • The device type icon
    • The space used vs free space
    • The current status of the device
    • The last time the device was online
    • The device’s sync status
      • Selecting the Sync Status will show you which devices to turn on to receive the media to this device.

Library Stats

Your Library stats are made up of a few different panels and tell you about your library and its contents.

  • People – How many people are tagged in your library and how many photos of each.
  • Places – How many locations you’ve visited and how many photos were taken in each location.
  • Keywords – Which keywords have been used in your library.

Additionally, Mylio has some less frequently used panels that can be toggled on by clicking the gear in the top right corner of the Dashboard and turning them on. These include:

  • Import Sessions – A list of your imports that have been made in your library.
  • Bandwidth – How much bandwidth Mylio is using when syncing your images between devices.
  • Task – A list of important tasks that Mylio is currently taking or has queued.

Setting Custom Device Sync Policies

$

0

Mylio’s Custom Sync Policies (also referred to as Selective Sync) allow you to take control over your Mylio Library and specify which version of your photos sync to your devices. This option allows you to set specific folders to have different Sync Policies than your device overall. It even allows you to change the Sync Policy of specific folders for local or remote devices.

Custom Sync Policies can be used in a variety of ways. For instance, you can set all media rated 5-stars to sync Original photos or photos with specific keywords to sync at a higher or lower quality than other photos.

With Mylio, you can take your entire photo library with you. Custom Sync settings are not designed to limit which photos are syncing to your device, only what quality of the photo is syncing.

Note:  To allow proper performance, any Mylio device must maintain at least the thumbnail for each file in your library. There is not currently an option to exclude thumbnails from a Mylio device

Turning on a Custom Device Sync Policy

Here’s how to turn on Custom Device Sync Policies:

  • Open the Dashboard and locate the Devices section.
  • Select the device you’re currently using.

  • Select Device Sync Policy Settings.
  • Select “Advanced Settings”, then “Customize”.

  • When viewing the Sync Policy settings for the device you’re currently using, you have additional options to turn on Tap to Sync and the Sync Panel. If you find either of these features intrusive, you can toggle them off while still maintaining the custom sync settings. You cannot toggle these settings when viewing the Sync Policy settings for a remote device.

If you have downgraded a file or folder’s Sync Policy, you will need to clear Mylio’s cache before space is recovered by your device. More information on clearing cache can be found here.

Using Tap to Sync

Using Tap to Sync

With a Custom Sync Policy, Mylio allows you to easily adjust the Sync Policy folders locally for the device you are using.

  • If the Tap to Sync setting is turned on, each folder in grid view will have a small T/P/O/* icon at the top right.
  • Tap or click this icon to set that folder’s Sync Policy to Thumbnail, Preview, or Original.

  • If there is a * in the Tap to Sync icon it indicates that the folder has a Custom Policy.
  • If you want to adjust the Sync Policy for individual files, then using a custom sync policy with a rating, label, or keyword on the folder will be needed.

Note:   If lowering the resolution of synced photos, any photos already synced to the device will remain cached locally until you clear the cache.

Adjusting Policies from the Sync Panel

Adjusting Policies from the Sync Panel

With access to the Sync Panel, Mylio allows you to alter the Sync Policy of any folder for any device on your account (local or remote).

  • Select the folder that you wish to alter the Sync Policy for.
  • Open the Sync section of the Details panel.
  • With your selection made and outlined in blue, select the device that you would like to adjust the Sync Policy for by clicking on its name in the Sync Panel.
  • Mylio will open the Adjust Sync Policy window allowing you to set that folder’s Sync Policy to Thumbnail, Preview, or Original.
  • Toggle the Custom option to apply a Custom Sync Policy for the selected folder on that device.

Hiding Specific Folders or Media from Life Calendar™

$
0
0

Mylio allows you to hide specific, unwanted media from Events view, Calendar view, and slideshows to ensure that only desired photos are found when browsing with those views. Hiding specific content from Events, Calendar, and Slideshows does not remove the content from your library, or alter the content’s Sync Policy. Instead, it excludes the selected files from populating those views.

Media can be hidden by hiding the folder that contains that media. Individual pieces of media cannot be hidden, only the folder they are a part of – though you can hide subfolders. Folders must be hidden individually and not with multiple folders selected.

To hide a folder and its contained media:

  1. From Folder view select the folder or subfolder you wish to exclude from Events and Calendar view.
  2. Open the Info section of the Details Panel and scroll down.
  3. Toggle on “Don’t Show in Calendar” to exclude the contained media and all of its subfolders from Events view, Calendar view, and slideshows.

Managing the devices on your Mylio account ensures that each device you have registered is setup and behaving as expected. Knowing the settings available to the devices on your account can help you better utilize Mylio to your liking.

Opening the Device Settings

  1. Open Mylio’s Dashboard.
  2. Select the icon of thedevice that you wish to edit the settings of.

Using the Device Settings Window

The Device Settings dialog allows you to alter the settings for a specific device in regards to how it relates to Mylio. Below are the major components of the Device Settings menu…

  • Device NicknameThe device name can be changed by simply selecting it.
  • Clear Cache Mylio’s cache will hold photos that your machine has but does not want. This generally happens after changing Sync Policies for your machine. Use this command to clear the cache.
Note:  Only devices with policies set to either Thumbnails, Previews, or Custom Sync policies will have the Clear Cache button. You can only empty the cache for a device that you are currently using.
  • Unregister this Device – Remove this device completely from Mylio. This options will cause the current device stops syncing with future photos. It is recommended that you ensure all photos within this copy of Mylio are synced to other copies before unregistering a device. You can also unregister a device from your account management page.
  • Device Sync Policy Settings – View and change what quality images are synced to your device.
  • Show Media Waiting To Sync – Displays the media that is currently waiting to sync to that device. If there is no media waiting to sync this option will not be available.
  • Minimum Free Space – Set the space threshold that Mylio is allowed to work within. Setting this number means that Mylio will stop syncing if you have less than this space available on your machine. Mylio can manage this setting for you or you can turn off “Automatically Manage” to adjust the slider yourself.

Note:  It is not possible to set Mylio’s minimum free space to be less than 1GB due to performance reasons.
  • Vault Migration – Mylio will walk you through the steps of transferring a Vault that may be low on storage to a higher storage device. If your device is not set as a Vault, this option will not be available.

Setting a Device Sync Policy

In its default state, Mylio is designed for you to only need to answer one question:

Do I want to store all of my original photos on this device, or do I want Mylio to automatically optimize my images for me to save space?

If you choose to store all of your Original images as well as the Thumbnails and Previews on a device, you are creating a Mylio Vault. Vaults are designed to keep your information safe by keeping a copy of all of your files. And the more Vaults you have, the safer your photos are. Vaults can be any device that has enough storage to hold your entire photo library, but popular Vaults are cloud storage providers, external hard drives, NAS devices, and desktop computers.

  • Simple Settings– Choose between Mylio’s Auto-optimized and Vault settings.
  • Keep documents/videos smaller than – Mylio does not make Preview quality versions of documents and videos. The Originals are either synced to your device or not.  Use the slider to set specific file size limits, All, or None.

  • Advanced Settings – Turn on Mylio’s Tap to Sync and Sync Panel features, as well as gain access to setting a Custom Device Sync Policy.
  • Show Customizations – Specify which version of your photos sync to your devices with a Custom Device Sync Policy.
  • Reset Device Quality – Resets all files to either Thumbnails or Auto-optimized (whichever is selected at the top when this button is clicked). This may cause some files to be cached and/or removed from a device if it becomes low on storage.

Adjusting Time and Date for Photos or Sets of Photos

$

0

Mylio has powerful tools to help you keep your photos’ metadata correct and up to date. Mylio has two different ways to alter a photos capture date. Both options are chosen from Mylio’s Adjust Date and Time dialog:

  1. Open Mylio and select the photo you wish to alter the date of.
  2. Open the Info section of the Details panel.
  3. Mylio will display the capture time and date that the selected photo is set to. Select this to bring up the Adjust Date and Time dialog.

There are a few ways to adjust the time and date of a photo or set of photos:

  1. Shift Time and Date – A range of photos can have their time and date shift by a set amount of time. This means photos keep the same chronological time, but the start and end date of the event move. This is commonly used to offset time zone issues. Example: move all selected photos two hours into the future. More than 1 photo needs to be selected before opeing the Adjust Date/Time window to view the Shift Dates option.
  2. Set Time and Date – Set all selected photos to a specific time and date. Example: set all selected photos to 2:00pm
  3. Date Range – Set the date of your selection to an estimated range of dates. Example: set all selected photos from Jan 1, 2019-Dec 31, 2019 (photo was taken sometime in 2019). See here to learn more about setting Fuzzy Dates with the Date Range option.
  4. Undated – Removes any date/time metadata from the catalog.

Shift Time and Date

Shifting a photo’s time and date allows you to adjust a set of photos by a certain amount of time. For instance, if you have a set of photos that were taken with your camera’s time set incorrectly, you can shift the entire set of photos by X amount of time. This is done by following these steps:

  1. Select the set of photos you wish to adjust the time and date of.
  2. Set the correct time and date by using the Adjust Date and Time dialog. Month and year can be changed at the top. The date can be chosen by clicking on the desired date. Time can be altered at the top of the window.
Note:  sometimes using a keyboard may be faster than using the date picker. In these instances, click on and type in a full date in the year field and Mylio will adjust the date picker for you. Date should be formatted as: YYYY/MM/DD or YY/M/D
  3. Once confirmed, select Shift to adjust the time and date for all selected photos.

Set Time and Date

Selecting a photo or set of photos times tells Mylio that your images were taken at a specific time and date. This means all photos will be set to the exact same time and date.

  3. Once confirmed, select Set to adjust the time and date for all selected photos.

Troubleshooting: Fixing Unprotected Images

$
0
0

In some circumstances, Mylio may display images as unprotected in the Dashboard or the Sync panel. This means that your photos are not on all devices that have a sync policy to “want” them. If some images are listed as unprotected, the steps below will help you identify images and get them protected across multiple devices.

Note:   the steps below assume that you have at least a device set as a Vault. If no device is set as a vault then all images are marked as unprotected.

Identifying Which Photos Are Not Protected

  1. Open Mylio and select the Dashboard icon at the top corner.
  2. Select the “X Unprotected Images” text at the top of the Devices list.
  3. Mylio will display the images that are not protected across all devices.
  4. Select 1 of the images (or all of them)
  5. Open the Sync panel by selecting the two arrows in the top right of the Details panel.
Note:  if you do not see the Sync Panel you can turn the feature in the Advanced section of the Device Settings.
  6. Using the Sync panel, locate the device that has a solid green line (or green squiggly line) under the Originals column. This is the device that has the Originals. If you do not see a device with green under Originals please see the next section of this article.
  7. While in the Sync panel, locate the device that has orange under Originals. This is the device that wants Originals.
  8. Bring both the device that has Originals and the device that wants Originals online by opening Mylio on both devices while they are on the same wi-fi network. If the device that wants Originals is an external drive, plug that drive into a computer and run Mylio on that device.
  9. Mylio will automatically protect the unprotected images.

Working with Photos That Do Not Have Originals On Any Device

If, when looking at the Sync panel, you cannot identify a device that has Originals (green line under Original) this means that the Original file is not available to Mylio and the file is not able to be protected. This can happen for multiple reasons:

  1. The file is missing and needs to be relinked. In this case, the folder that the file resides in should say Missing on it in red text. You can relink the folder to fix this.
  2. The Original file has been deleted from the initial device creating a Lost Original. This can happen most commonly on mobile devices if a photo has been deleted directly from the Camera Roll before Mylio has been given time to sync the original to another device.
  3. The library has been restored from a Time Machine or other backup, causing Mylio to know that is has images but doesn’t know where those images are.

Adding and Editing Keywords

Adding or editing keywords in Mylio is an easy way to keep all of your photos organized and easily searchable. Mylio makes it easy to add, edit, remove, and adjust keywords.

Adding or removing keywords

When using keywords that are consistent across a selection of photos, or editing keywords for a single keyword, you can easily use the standard Keywords section in the Info section of the Details panel.

  1. Open Mylio and select the image or images you would like to apply keywords to.
  2. Navigate to the Info section of the Details panel.
  3. Use the Keywords section to add, remove, and edit keywords.

View a list of used Keywords

Mylio includes a list of all keywords currently used within your library. This is helpful if you don’t remember a specific keyword you may have used to represent a specific set of photos.

  1. Open the Search menu by clicking the drop-down arrow on the right of the Search bar.
  2. The Keywords Search bar has a drop-down arrow to the right of the Search bar that includes your list of keywords.
  3. Keywords can also be found in the Dashboard by toggling on the Keywords column from the Dashboard View menu

Managing Keywords in bulk

Keywords can be added or removed for a selection of photos when in a grid view. Start by selecting a group of photos. In the Info panel to the right, select the Edit Keywords button The check-mark indicates that all selected media has that keyword, the X indicates that it does not, and the star indicates that some of the media selected have the keyword. You can select the check-mark to add the keyword to all the media selected or select the X to remove them.

Understanding Syncing with Mylio

$

0

Keeping all of your memories on all of your devices is easy with Mylio. Syncing allows each of your devices, whether it be computers, phones, tablets or external hard drives to always have the same information. Syncing also ensures that new photos added to one device are available on other devices and that edits, metadata, and organization changes made on one device are available on all of your devices.

How Syncing Works

Mylio syncs over a peer-to-peer connection to ensure that photos and videos are shared between your devices quickly and safely. Peer-to-peer means that your devices do not utilize the internet or the cloud to transfer photos. Instead, Mylio uses a direct wireless connection between your devices to sync information. Mylio gains this direct connection by looking at your devices on a network. This network can be a home wireless network, a wired/wireless hybrid network, or even an open Wi-Fi network (restrictions apply). Even though Mylio utilizes a network, it does not require the internet – simply that your devices be connected to the same network.

Mylio must meet three criteria in order to sync your devices:

  1. All devices must be logged into the same Mylio account.
  2. All devices must be connected to the same network.
  3. All devices must be running Mylio (Mylio must be in the foreground on mobile devices).

When these three criteria are met Mylio will transfer your photos, videos, edits, metadata, and organization between all of your devices quickly and safely.

Photo Quality Basics

Mylio has three different photo quality sizes that can be stored on your devices:

  • Thumbnails – A small version of your photos (20kb to 30kb) that is great for referencing your full library. Ideal for mobile devices. Does not allow editing.
  • Previews – Medium quality (approximately 1mb) that gives an accurate representation of your photos at a fraction of the space. Perfect for laptops. Fully editable.
  • Originals – Your full quality file (original file size). RAW compatible. Fully editable.

If you have told Mylio to automatically optimize the storage of your device, we’ll choose what photo quality we think you’ll want to see based off of specific criteria.

You can change a device between a Vault and Auto-Optimized quality by:

  1. Open Mylio and select the Dashboard in the top right corner.
  2. Select the device that you wish to change between a Vault and Auto-Optimized quality to open the Device Settings.
  3. Select Device Sync Policy Settings
  4. When viewing just the default Simple Device Settings, you can toggle between Vault and Auto Optimized as your desired quality. You can also create a Custom Device Sync Policy by toggling on Advanced Settings.

Advanced Quality Settings

If you’re looking for a bit more control over how your images sync, then Mylio’s Advanced syncing options are for you.

When toggling on Advanced syncing options, Mylio allows you to change your device’s Sync Policy on a more granular level. Your device’s Sync Policy is what quality of photo your device will sync images in. Any new photo added to Mylio on another device will sync to this device in this quality.

To turn on Mylio’s Advanced sync options, simply:

  1. Open Mylio and select the Dashboard in the top right corner of Mylio.
  2. Select the device that you wish to change the Sync Policy of.
  3. In the Device Settings, toggle on the Advanced option under Device Quality to show Mylio’s advanced Sync Policies.

Mylio has three different Sync Policies:

  • Thumbnails – A small version of your photos (20kb to 30kb) that is great for referencing your full library. Ideal for mobile devices. Does not allow editing.
  • Auto-Optimized – Mylio will manage your library based on the available storage on your device.
  • Vault – All three file types are stored. Great for desktops.

To learn more about setting Custom Sync Policies, please see this article. Any Custom Sync Polices to the device or folders will override the sync policy set at the top of this window. You can reset any folders or cutom polices overriding the Device Sync Policy by selecting the “Reset Device Quality” button at the bottom.

Troubleshooting: Resetting and Starting Mylio Over

$
0
0

This article will walk you through either starting over with Mylio on one specific device or starting Mylio over on all devices. Before doing so, it is important to understand the main parts of Mylio:

  1. Mylio Library – This is where your photos are actually stored. By default, this is within a folder named “Mylio” in your user folder on a computer or a “Mylio_ab123” (abc123 being random characters) folder on an external drive.
  2. Mylio Catalog – This is where information about your library is stored, like how many photos you have and your organization. This is synced between machines.
  3. Mylio Account – This tells Mylio how many devices you have, what they are, and keeps them up to date.

Resetting Mylio will reset your Mylio Catalog and possibly your Mylio Account. You will need to decide if you would like to delete the Mylio Library or not, depending on if you have your photos protected to other locations and how you would like to re-import them to Mylio if you start Mylio over on all devices.

Start Over on One Device

Completing these steps will allow you to sign in to Mylio as if it were a brand new device.

  1. Open Mylio and select Help from the Navigation panel.
  2. Select Show Support Options on Startup.
  3. Reopen the Mylio application.
  4. Select Factory Reset Mylio from the Support Options dialog.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to completely reset your device.
  6. Once reset, navigate to https://account.mylio.com to log in to your Mylio account.
  7. Select the “X” next to the device that you have reset to remove it from your account.

Once reset, you can choose to delete the Mylio Library (by default saved to your user) or rename it. If you have only synced thumbnails and previews, deleting it is usually best. If you have synced Originals stored on the reset device, be sure those images are on other devices before deleting them. Signing back into Mylio on the reset device will queue a re-sync of the library from other devices on the account. There should be no need to import anything.

Warning:   always be sure your Original images are safe on multiple devices before deleting them from your computer!

Start Over on All Devices

Doing this will:

  1. Delete all information from Mylio’s servers.
  2. Unregister all devices from your account.
  3. Log out of Mylio on all devices.
  4. Remove all Mylio data (albums, events, people).

There are two steps to resetting your account and starting over in Mylio:

Reset Cloud Data

  1. Login to your Mylio Account at http://account.mylio.com.
  2. Locate the Restart Account button listed on this page.
  3. Follow the instructions here to reset any Mylio data and restart your account.

Reset Mylio Application

Once your cloud data has been reset, your Mylio applications will alert you that you have been signed out.

  1. Open Mylio and select Help from the Navigation panel.
  2. Select Show Support Options on Startup.
  3. Reopen the Mylio application.
  4. You’ll be shown the Support Options dialog.
  5. Select Factory Reset Mylio.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to completely reset your device.

Once reset, you can choose to delete the Mylio Library (by default saved to your user) or rename it. If you have only synced thumbnails and previews, deleting it is usually best.

Warning:   always be sure your Original images are safe on multiple devices before deleting them from your computer!

Understanding Safe File System Delete

What is Safe File System Delete?

Mylio’s Safe File System Delete is an option available in the Source Folders settings to ensure your data remains safe. By default, it is turned on when setting up Mylio for the first time. It is specific to Vault devices meaning if you

When Safe File System Delete is on, Mylio recognizes when images are added to or edited in a folder by the file system or another app outside of Mylio, but it doesn’t read or replicate deletions that happen outside of Mylio.

Here are some ways that safe delete works:

  1. Images deleted in the File System will not be removed from the Mylio catalog or other devices.
  2. If a device is set as a Vault, images deleted in the File System will be synced back from another deivce the images are available somewhere else.
  3. If a device is not set as a Vault (most likely using a Custom Sync Policy), images deleted in the File System will be marked in the catalog to be deleted everywhere. A warning (see screenshot below) may appear detecting filesystem changes if “Show filesystem changes” is toggled on under Settings->General. This warning can allow you to decive to apply the chagnes (delete the files everywhere) or exit the warning telling Mylio to attempt to sync back the media from a Vault.

When Safe File System Delete is off, Mylio is designed to keep a 1:1 relationship with the Source Folders in your operating system. If a file is deleted in the Mylio application, it is also deleted in the folder in macOS Finder/Windows File Explorer. If a file is deleted in the folder in macOS Finder/Windows File Explorer, it is also deleted in Mylio. The action of deleting the media on one machine would then sync to all devices on the account where the media would be deleted from all machines.

Turning Safe Delete On or Off

Safe Delete can be toggled on and off per device, but not per Source Folder. Safe delete can be toggled on and off by:

  1. Open Mylio and select Settings from the View menu.
  2. Select Source Folders
  3. Toggle on or off the Safe Delete on Vaults option.

Mylio is Running in the Background

In Mylio version 3.7 and later, desktop computers (Mac and Windows) may continue running in the background when the window is closed. The first time the Mylio window is closed a notification in the top Menu bar (Mac) or App tray (Windows) will let you know that Mylio may still be running some tasks. Please note, background syncing on mobile devices is not yet available.

This setting can also be adjusted in Mylio under Settings->General->Quit App on Close. By default, this setting is off to allow processes like syncing with other devices to complete after the window is closed. Turning this setting on will stop all Mylio processes on the computer from running once the application window is closed.
