Mylio and Seagate

Mylio can set up a Vault for backing up your files and library details. Original files are backed up automatically, preventing the loss that often comes when one of our devices or drives is damaged, lost or stolen. Use external drives, desktop computers or even cloud services like Amazon or Google Drive as a Vault to protect your files. Want more redundancy? Set up multiple Vaults and Mylio will keep them all synchronized and your files protected – even across multiple remote locations.

Seagate Backup Plus drives (available in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 5TB sizes) are ideal drives to use as Vaults with Mylio. Even better, these drives come with a free year of subscription to Mylio Create, offering a larger library size and more devices than the standard free version of Mylio. If you have purchased one of these drives and are looking to use Mylio for the first time, please look for and launch the “Start Here” application that is pre-loaded on your Seagate Backup Plus drive.

Not seeing the Mylio offer? If the drive is not one of the models listed here on Seagate’s website, then it may not be eligible for a free year of Mylio Create.

Already a Mylio member? Follow the prompts of the “Start Here” application and you will be prompted to sign into your Mylio account. Our support team will take it from there to assist you further.

If you are experiencing any issues with your Seagate drive that is not related to Mylio please contact Seagate Support.

Hello!

¡Hola!

Bonjour!

Mylio has gone global! We’re translated into both Spanish and French, with more languages to come soon. You can adjust your preferred language in Mylio’s appearance settings.

We’ve Upgraded to Notifications: Instead of banners, Mylio’s new notification and activity center keeps your alerts and progress out of the way so you can continue to enjoy your media without disruption. You choose when you want to open the Notifications and Activity Center to see what Mylio is working on and any issues you should be aware of.

Folder Events: Quickly populate your Life Calendar™ by using the “Show Folder as Calendar Event” button. This automatically creates an Event in your calendar containing images from that folder. You can even save filters to display only the images from a folder that you want in the event!

Easier Sync Controls: Control what images are on what devices using Mylio’s new Sync Policy Settings. Tap to Sync allows you to easily change the quality of folders, while the Sync Panel gives you full control of all of your devices. Not looking for too many options? We have you covered with an improved auto-optimization process and Simple Custom options as well. Check out these changes by opening the Device settings from the Dashboard or Sync Panel (if enabled).

There’s more to discover with Mylio 3.5! For a full list of changes, please see our change log.

The Search Bar

$
0
0

Searching for just about anything is easy in Mylio. You can do so using Mylio’s Search bar. The Search bar is a generic search on your entire library. All metadata and Mylio specific data will be searched. You can use search modifiers to search more directly for a specific piece of information.

The Search Menu

Opening the Search menu allows you to strategically search for certain aspects of photos. Open the Search menu by clicking the small arrow at the right side of the search bar.

The four icons at the top of the Search menu take you between Pinned searches, Rating searches, People searches, and Map searches. These allow you to toggle between different search types and easily narrow down your desired search.

The Keywords search field will search the keyword field of any photo. Select the disclosure triangle to the right of the keyword field to display a list of all keywords within your Mylio database.

Ratings allow you to narrow down your search by rating, label, or flag.

Finally, you can select “Show All” to view all files organized by Images, Videos, and Documents.

Using Multiple Keywords

You can search for photos that contain only a single keyword or photos that contain multiple keywords.

To search for photos that contain multiple keywords, simply search for the keywords separated by a comma and contained in quotation marks.

For example, if you have added the keywords “London”, “Orlando”, “Seattle”, “Disney” and “Grandma” to a photo – you can now do inclusive searches, which means if you enter the search term: “Grandma, Seattle” it will only show you photos that have both the keywords in them. Please note that your search queries must be listed in alphabetical order to return desired results.

The keywords must be placed inside quotation marks and separated by a comma.

Searching in Calendar View

When in Calendar view, simply typing a word in the search bar will search for events. Mylio will display any event that contains the word searched for in a list on the right making it even easier to find your memories.

Search Modifiers

Finding the right photo in a large library can be time-consuming. Mylio can help you locate the photo you’re looking for by narrowing down the results shown when searching for a photo!

This can be accomplished by adding information that you know about the photo into the Search bar in Mylio. When making your search type in a search term, colon, and then your keyword. They can even be combined to really narrow down your search.

Example:

make:Nikon iso:200

This will show all photos shot with a Nikon camera with the ISO of 200.

Search terms include:

  • caption – References the caption field, which is editable in the info panel.
  • copyright – References the copyright field, which is editable in the info panel.
  • date – Can be searched for without the ‘date’ prefix with month/day/year format. Example: 01/18/2016 or 1/18/16
  • file – References the file name, which is editable in the info panel.
  • flag – Use “on/off” to show photos that have been flagged in the rating bar.
  • flash – Use “yes/no” or “true/false” to show photos that did or did not set off flash when taken.
  • folder – Limits searches to a particular folder. Example: folder:Best Friend’s Wedding, folder:Fourth of July
  • importdateThe date in which the file was imported into Mylio.
  • iso – Find photos taken with a specific ISO. Example: iso:100
  • keyword – Searches for specific keywords that have been added to your photos.
  • label – References the label of the picture, which is editable in the rating bar. Example: label:red, label:yellow, label:green, label:blue, label:purple
  • lens – Example: lens:80.0-200.0
  • place – Searches Mylio’s places data to search for photos taken at a specific place, which is editable in the Places Panel.
  • make – Find photos taken with a specific camera make. Example: make:canon, make:Nikon, make:Apple
  • model – Find photos taken with a specific camera model. Example: model:6D, model:D5300, model:iPhone 5S
  • people – Searches Mylio’s people data to search for photos taken of a specific person, which is editable in the people panel.
  • rating – References the rating of the picture, which is editable in the rating bar. Example: rating:3
  • source – Finds photos that were imported from a specific source. Example: source:iPhoto, source:”Camera Roll”, source:Facebook
  • title – References the title field, which is editable in the info panel.

Using Multiple Search Terms

In some scenarios, you may want to combine search terms to better find a specific photo or set of photos. This can be done by either combining elements of a single search modifier or combining two search modifiers with a single space between them. Additionally, you can use quotes to tell Mylio that your search term is a phrase, meaning it has multiple words or punctuation.

Example of Single Modifier with Multiple Variables:

rating:1,2,3

This search will show all photos with the rating of 1, 2, or 3 stars.

Example of Multiple Modifiers:

make:Nikon folder:Whales

This search will return all photos shot with a Nikon camera found in the folder called Whales.

Example of Multiple Modifiers with a Phrase:

make:Nikon folder:”Best Photos” keyword:”stars at night”

This search will return photos taken with a Nikon camera, found in the Best Photos folder, with the keywords “stars at night”.

Troubleshooting: Unable to Sync Photos Between Devices

$
0
0

Mylio will transfer photos and edits between your devices whether you’re syncing just Thumbnails, Previews, or Originals. If your devices are not receiving or sending photos and edits to your other devices, follow the steps below and you should be syncing in no time!

Are the Devices Seeing Each Other?

The first step in getting your devices to sync is to make sure they can see each other on the local network.

To do this, open the Dashboard by selecting it from the Navigation panel.

  • Devices that are visible to each other will have white icons and say “In Sync” or “Syncing” underneath them.
  • Devices that cannot see each other will have gray icons and say “Unavailable” or “Out of Sync” underneath them.

No, Devices Do Not See Each Other

Mylio will not sync to devices that are not visible to each other in the Dashboard. Be sure you are meeting Mylio’s three basic syncing criteria:

  1. Devices are all on the same Mylio Account. You can check this from Mylio’s Settings > Account.
  2. Devices are all on the same wi-fi or local network.
  3. Devices all have Mylio open and running. On mobile devices, Mylio must be in the foreground.

Additional Troubleshooting

  • If you’re on Windows, ensure that Mylio is allowed through the Windows Firewall on both public and private networks:
    • Navigate to Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Firewall, then select “Allow an app or feature through Windows Firewall” on the left.
    • Locate Mylio in the list of applications and ensure both the PRIVATE and PUBLIC columns are checked.
      • If these settings need to be adjusted, select Change Settings at the top right of this window, then OK at the bottom to confirm the change.
  • Toggle Increase Local Discovery within Mylio by navigating to Settings > Sync > Customize on both devices that are trying to communicate.
    • Increase Local Discovery allows for more devices to see each other but often causes additional network traffic.
Note:   Increase Local Discovery needs to be turned on for both devices that are not communicating!
  • Toggle on RendezVous within Mylio by navigating to Settings > Sync on both devices that are trying to communicate.
    • RendzVous syncing is slower than traditional peer-to-peer syncing but may help devices become connected under specific network conditions.
Note:  RendezVous needs to be turned on for both devices that are not communicating!

Yes, Devices See Each Other

If all of your devices are listed in the Dashboard as online but photos are not syncing between them, there are a few troubleshooting steps to go through:

  • To rule out the possibility that the network your devices are connected to is causing the issue, try an ad-hoc network to establish a direct connection between devices. Click here for instructions.
  • Check that your subscription is current. Your photos will stop syncing if your account is no longer valid. To verify your subscription status, click here and sign in.
  • Check to make sure there is not stuck activity at the bottom of the Sync Panel, such as “Stuck Moving Files or Folders on Disk”. If there is, follow these steps.

Are There Still Photos Waiting to Sync?

You may have a few devices online and still not have a fully synced Mylio library. This will be indicated by gray or red bubbles above devices in the Dashboard. Since Mylio watches photos on many devices, it can be challenging to remember what devices may have added an original that is waiting to sync. To determine what device, or devices, need to be synced:

  1. Open Mylio.
  2. Select the Dashboard.
  3. Select a device that has a gray or red bubble above it.
  4. Select ‘Show Media Waiting to Sync’.
  5. Mylio will display all of the images that still need to sync. Select them all by using the Action menu.
  6. The Sync panel will now show you where the Originals are for the selected photos, you can look for the green bar under Originals to see who currently has that photo.
  7. Make sure the device that is storing the originals is currently online. If not, open Mylio on that device and give it some time to sync the photos.

Understanding Linked Calendars

Mylio can automatically create events from your digital calendars. This is a fast and easy way to populate your Life Calendar™ with all of your most important life events. Mylio can import calendars from your device’s calendar service, including Outlook, Gmail, and iCloud calendars.

Setting Up Linked Calendars

Setting Up Linked Calendars

  1. Open Mylio and select Settings from the View menu
  2. Select Linked Calendars
  3. Mylio will show you the calendars that are available to import on your device.
Note:  Mylio must have access to your calendars to display this information. If access is not granted, please see the “Changing Access to Calendars” section of this page.
  4. Once displayed, you can toggle a calendar ON or OFF here. You also have additional settings…
    1. Nickname – Give your calendar a nickname in Mylio for easy viewing.
    2. Show More Options – show additional options related to calendar import.
      1. Ignore Events Containing – this section allows you to type in words that you would like Mylio to avoid when importing your calendar. This can help keep things tidy so that doctors appointments and deliveries are not imported.
      2. Import Events if Mylio has Media – only import events that have media taken during that day or time period.
      3. With duration at least… – set a minimum time limit for event duration.

Advanced Import Options

$

0

When importing your photos, Mylio offers a clean and easy import process to quickly get your images into Mylio. If you want more options when importing your photos, you can toggle on Mylio’s Advanced Import Options. Here is how:

  1. Open Mylio and select Settings from the View menu.
  2. Select Advanced.
  3. Toggle on Show Advanced Import Settings.

Available Advanced Import Options

Not all options below will be available for all import types.

  • File Naming
Auto-adjust the name of your files as they are imported. This option allows you to rename files in specified ways as the files are loaded into your Mylio Library. Mylio will reference the photos’ metadata to find the information needed for the renaming. This action can be performed after import as well by using Mylio’s auto-file naming feature.
  • Folder Organization
Adjusting your photos’ folder organization on import allows you to change the file structure that your files are in as they are being imported into Mylio. By default, Mylio is set to keep the existing organization and import all folders. This can be changed to ‘”Keep existing organization – Import Contents”  which ignores the top level folder and simply imports the contents of that folder. For example, if there is a folder called “Great Photos” that is separated between “Landscape”, “Animals”, and “Portrait” photos, importing with the “Keep existing organization- Import Folders” will import the “Great Photos” folder with all folders inside of it. Using the “Keep existing organization – Import Contents” command will only import the three subfolders “Landscape”, “Animals”, and “Portraits”.
  • Folder Organization – Custom Folder Names
Mylio allows you to name the folder you are importing into based off of many different criteria. This is found within the Folder Organization section, below the “Keep existing organization” options. Custom folder names allow you to import into a folder that is named off of the information found within your photo’s metadata. This includes folders with names such as year/month, year, day, and even current date. Additionally, you can create a custom naming scheme based off of many different factors, like time, camera name, and photo sequence.
  • Add Folder Name to Keywords
When on, Mylio will automatically add the folder name to the keyword of the imported photos.
  • Keywords
Automatically apply new keywords to all imported photos.

Rating Photos on Desktop and Tablets

The Rating Bar in Mylio makes it easy to keep your photos organized. Use these tools to visually tag your photos into different categories.

The Rating Bar can be opened easily by selecting the label/tag icon from the Quick Actions Bar. This will open the Rating Bar, as pictured here:

  • Flag – A simple flag. This will put a flag icon on your photo to reference later. Much like the labels, there is no wrong way to use the flag!
  • Stars – Use the stars to symbolize 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5-star photos. This is an easy way to separate your great photos from the good photos, and the ones that get deleted from the ones that get framed.
  • Labels – Labels are a great way to classify photos. While everyone has unique workflows, labels are often used to separate types of images. For instance, red images can be animal photos, yellow could mean landscape, and green means portrait.
  • Auto-Advance – with a photo in full screen, making a change to the rating, label, or flag to a photo will cause the photo to auto-advance to the next photo. No swiping or clicking required!

Once you have tagged, starred, or flagged your photo you can easily see these marking on each photo. This makes browsing through your photos for that specific show effortless. You can even search or filter by rating, label, or flag.

Setting Capture Dates For Photos Without an Exact Date

$
0
0

Sometimes you may have photos that you do not know an exact date for. Scanned photos, inherited photos, and computer images may require less of a defined capture date than the standard DAY/MONTH/YEAR TIME is designed for. In these instances, Mylio allows you to set a Fuzzy date so that your photos can appear correct in Calendar view and All Photos view. With Fuzzy dates, Mylio allows you to set either a photo to a specific year, year/month, year/month/day, or the full year/month/day/time while leaving the other information empty.

Setting a Fuzzy Date

  1. Select the photo(s) that you would like to set Fuzzy Dates for.
  2. Open the Info section in the Details panel.
  3. Select the date or date range above the Title to open up the Adjust Date & Time dialog.
  4. Select Single Date, Date Range, or Undated
  5. You can select the gear in the top right of the Adjust Date & Time dialog to reveal multiple options:
    1. Set as Today – Sets the date (year, month, day) to the current date but does not adjust the time.
    2. Set to Start of Day – Sets the time to 12:00 AM
    3. Set to Start of Month – Sets the date to the 1st day of the selected month
    4. Set to Start of Year – Sets the date to January, 1st of the selected year
    5. Set to Start of Decade -Sets the date to January, 1st of the first year of the selected decade (1990, 2000, 2010, etc)
  6. Set a Date Range:
    1. Select the start of your range first then select “Next” in the bottom right.
    2. Select your end date for your range and confirm in the bottom right bottom displaying the propsed range

Viewing a Fuzzy Dated Photo

Once you have photos that do not have specific dates, they will generally show as the first in their series. For instance, in All Photos view, the photos set to the  date range of January 1st, 1950 – Dec 31st,1959 will show up before any image dated in the year 1950 and after any image dated in the year 1949. There will also be an annotation in the bottom right that indicates the file is dated within a range of dates (this can be toggled on/off in the annotations section of the View menu in the top right).

In Calendar view, photos with fuzzy dating will appear in any day that includes the range. The image below is dated within the rage of the entire 1930’s decade. Drilling down to a specific day of that decade will still include the image in the grid. All date ranged images in a grid view of Calendar view will appear first.

Free Up Space on Camera Roll or Media Library

Mylio can help clear up space in your mobile device’s Camera Roll or Media Library once the original image has been imported and protected to Mylio. In order to do this, Mylio needs to ensure your photo is protected by having the original image in two other locations. If your photo is not in at least two other locations, Mylio will not delete the photo from your Camera Roll or Media Library.

To learn more about protecting your photos to clear Camera Roll or Media Library space, please see this article.

Free Up Space on iOS or Android

    1. Open Mylio on your iOS or Android device and navigate to Mylio’s settings by selecting “Settings” in the View menu.
    2. Select “Free up space on this device”.
  1. Use the sliders to direct Mylio to all media or just the images older than 30, 45, or 60 days.
  2. Toggle on/off if you want Mylio to automatically delete media from the Camera Roll if you already deleted it in Mylio.
  3. Opt to schedule clean ups automatically run every 30, 45, or 60 days or not.
  4. Press Continue to have Mylio Analize what media is available to delete from the camera roll.

Error Message: Mylio is unable to edit this file as the XMP is missing

If you are unable to edit an image and see this message in the Edit panel it typically means that the XMP was removed from the file system. Since XMP files are required for Mylio to apply edits a missing XMP file will prevent this action. Here are a few options to resolve this issue:

  1. If you have another device on your account you can attempt to sync the device missing the XMP with one that has it. Open Mylio on both devices and see if the XMP is synced and the photo is editable again. If not, quit Mylio on both devices and re-open.
  2. Check your Trash or Recycling folder on your computer for a recently deleted XMP file that matches the name of the photo you are trying to edit. If you do see the XMP in question, right-click on the file and “recover” or “put back” the image.
  3. If options one or two do not resolve the issue then the XMP may not be recoverable and the final option would be to export the image from Mylio and re-import it. Once the image is re-imported, verify it can be edited and delete the un-editable copy.

Understanding Safe File System Delete

What is Safe File System Delete?

Mylio’s Safe File System Delete is an option available in the Source Folders settings to ensure your data remains safe. By default, it is turned on when setting up Mylio for the first time.

When Safe File System Delete is on, Mylio recognizes when images are added to or edited in a folder by the file system or another app outside of Mylio, but it doesn’t read or replicate deletions that happen outside of Mylio.

Here are some ways that safe delete works:

  1. Images deleted in the File System will not be removed from the Mylio catalog or other devices.
  2. If a device is set as a Vault, images deleted in the File System will be synced back from another Vault if one is available.
  3. If a Custom Sync Policy is on, Mylio will respect the sync policy set for that folder.
    1. If the folder that the deletion occurs in is set to want Originals, the deleted media will be synced back
    2. If the folder that the deletion occurs in is not set to want Originals, the deleted media will not be synced back to that machine.

When Safe File System Delete is off, Mylio is designed to keep a 1:1 relationship with the Source Folders in your operating system. If a file is deleted in the Mylio application, it is also deleted in the folder in macOS Finder/Windows File Explorer. If a file is deleted in the folder in macOS Finder/Windows File Explorer, it is also deleted in Mylio. The action of deleting the media on one machine would then sync to all devices on the account where the media would be deleted from all machines.

Turning Safe Delete On or Off

Safe Delete can be toggled on and off per device, but not per Source Folder. Safe delete can be toggled on and off by:

  1. Open Mylio and select Settings from the View menu.
  2. Select Source Folders
  3. Toggle on or off the Safe Delete option.
