Known Issue: Mylio for iOS Does Not Export All Selected Images When Saving to Camera Roll

$
0
0

iOS devices may limit the number of media that Mylio can save from the Mylio app to the device’s Camera Roll. Generally, this number is 5 or around 5 and does not depend on the file type or resolution in Mylio.

This is a known issue with Apple’s ecosystem and something that we are hoping they will fix in the future.

Note:  other apps may not experience this issue by implementing a workaround that decreases sharing stability that Mylio does not wish to implement.

Importing Facebook Photos

$

0

Importing your photos from Facebook is a quick and easy way to populate your Mylio library with some of your favorite photos. Using Mylio’s Facebook Album import will copy any photos that you want from your Facebook albums directly into your Mylio library.

Note:  Facebook import does not import videos at this time.
Note:  Mylio will only import photos that meet a specific set of security restrictions. This means that photos that have been uploaded by others and tagged with you in them will not be imported. Only pictures of you that you have uploaded or confirmed as being you will be imported. This may cause a discrepancy in what you see online and what you see in Mylio.
  1. Select the Import icon from the top right corner of Mylio.
  2. Select Online Services.
  3. Select Facebook Albums.
  4. Mylio will automatically ask you for your Facebook user email and password.
  5. Once signed in, Mylio will display your albums on Facebook and allow you to select the ones you want to import. Selecting an album will highlight the text and put a blue check mark next to it.

  6. Once imported, you will be asked to confirm the location that you want to save your photos. You can save Facebook photos to any folder.
  7. Mylio will also read any tagged people in your Facebook photos and display them automatically in Mylio’s People view for convenience.
  8. If you have directly uploaded photos to your Facebook in an album, they will not be downloaded automatically to Mylio. However, you can import the album again and only the newly added photos will be copied into Mylio.

Importing from an External Drive

$
0
0

Mylio can utilize external drives in multiple ways with your Mylio Library. This includes importing photos from your external drive to your machine, displaying the photos on your external drive without copying them to your machine or even protecting the photos you already have in Mylio to your external drive. Whatever the case, Mylio can be used to help keep your photos and videos altogether, protected and synced across all of your devices.

Understanding External Drive Importing

When importing photos from an external drive, Mylio will often set up the drive as a Vault. This allows Mylio to protect the photos not already on the drive to the drive without you needing to do anything manually. For instance, if you have all of your photos on an external drive and import them into Mylio, Mylio will display the content of that drive. If, however, you download a series of pictures from Facebook directly to your computer and import them into Mylio, Mylio will also protect those photos to your external drive when it is connected. The drive and your Mylio Library will be a 1:1 copy of each other.

Warning:  importing photos on an external drive without the use of the External Drive import option is not supported by Mylio and may cause unexpected behavior.

Importing from an External Drive

To select the correct import option for your photos and import from your external drive, follow the steps below:

  1. Open Mylio and select the Import icon in the top right.
  2. Select External Drive.

  1. Select the drive you would like to import from and press Continue.

  1. Mylio will display two import options:

Add without moving

Adding an external drive without moving the contents is a valuable way of both importing your photos into Mylio and ensuring that all photos imported to Mylio that are not on the drive are protected there. Adding a drive means that Mylio will create a 1:1 copy of your Mylio Library on the external drive, or a Vault. Any photos added to Mylio that are not on the drive will be imported and protected to the drive automatically.

Since Mylio is keeping a 1:1 copy of your images, this means that deleting a file on the external drive will also delete it in Mylio.

Let’s look more closely at the Add without moving option:

  1. Once you are given the option to Add the contents of the drive without moving it, select it.
  2. Select the folder(s) that you would like to import into Mylio. These folders will remain on your external drive as originals and fulfill Mylio’s default device Sync Policy on your internal drive.
  3. Select Choose to begin the import process.
  4. Once the import has completed, Mylio will display the folders as top-level folders.
  5. The external drive also now displays as a device in the Dashboard and will be set as a Vault. Any photos not currently on that drive will be protected there automatically. The photos not already on the drive will be synced in a folder called “Mylio_xxxxx” where “xxxxx” is a unique identifier. The external drive also has all of the benefits of a regular Vault, meaning it can be taken between your other machines to sync Originals.
Warning:  do not rename the Mylio_xxxxxx folder as this is how Mylio identifies the device
  6. Since your internal drive has a Sync Policy that is being fulfilled, versions of your photos (Thumbnails, Previews, or Originals) will be stored internally. This means you can view and edit your photos (Previews and Originals only) even when the drive is not attached.

Copy External Drive

By selecting the Copy External Drive command, Mylio will allow you to select a folder or folders that you wish to copy off of the external drive and to your internal drive. The copied folders will remain both on the external drive and on the internal drive and the external drive can be removed and not plugged in again to access the original images.

The Copy option is valuable in many situations. A popular use for this option would be to copy a specific folder of images off of a drive that you may be borrowing from a friend or relative. This option could also be used when first populating your Mylio Library if you are trying to consolidate your media from many different external drives to one internal drive.

Removing images from Mylio that are on External Drive or Removing External Drive as Mylio Device

If you wish to remove a folder from Mylio that has been previously imported, you can do so by toggling the folder off in the Source Folders settings. This will remove the folder from Mylio but keep it on the external drive. More information can be found here.

If you wish to remove the external drive as a Mylio device, you can do so by unregistering the device in the device list. This process will not delete photos from Mylio or photos from the Mylio_xxxxx folder on the external drive. However, it is important that at least one other device has Originals of the images on the external drive if you want to content to remain in Mylio.

Import with Source Folders

$

Importing photos into Mylio using the Source Folders option is a quick and easy way to display photos that are already organized on your machine in a view that is familiar but within the Mylio application.

Warning:  source folders are not designed to be used with external drives. If importing from an external drive, please reference this article’s Add Without Moving section to import properly.

Understanding Source Folders

When choosing which folders to import as Source Folders, Mylio will keep your photos in the original location – meaning they are not being duplicated or moved. Because Mylio is referencing your folders and their contents in the original location, any change made in Mylio will be on your original files.

What does this mean?

  • Deleting photos in Mylio will delete the actual files from the original location in your file system.
  • Moving photos out of the folder and into another folder will move the photo file in your file system.

Adding folders as Source Folders is a great way to import into Mylio if you intend to keep your photos in the same location but use Mylio to track and manage them.

Importing with Source Folders

To proceed with adding a folder as a Source Folder, follow the steps below:
  1. Launch Mylio and select Settings from the View Menu.
  2. Select Source Folders.
  3. Mylio will open a new window that allows you to build your Mylio Library. By default, Mylio will display your machine’s Pictures and Movies folders, as well as the default Mylio Pictures folder.
  4. To add folders, simply select the Add More Folders button at the bottom of this panel and select the folders you would like Mylio to display.
  5. Any folder selected will be added to your Source Folders window and can be toggled on and off. The selected folders will be displayed within Mylio as top-level folders, next to the Mylio Pictures folder.

Removing folders as Source Folders

To remove a folder as a Source Folder and stop tracking its changes, follow these steps:
  1. Open Mylio and select Settings in the View menu.
  2. Select Source Folders.
  3. Mylio will display all of the folders that are part of your Mylio Library. To remove them, simply toggle the folder off.
  4. The folder will remain in the Source Folders settings to be easily toggled back on until you leave the settings window. Once you have left, the folder will no longer be listed.

Safe File System Delete

Mylio’s Safe File System Delete option is designed to ensure your images remain safe on your devices when accidentally deleted from your file system.

When Safe File System Delete is on, the following is true:

  1. If a file is deleted from the File System, it will not be removed from Mylio.
  2. If a file is deleted from the File System, the original file will not be deleted from other Vaults.

Submitting Helpful Screenshots

Sometimes, a Mylio Support team member may request a specific set of screenshots. Providing an informative screenshot can cut the diagnostic time for your issue down drastically, but it must be done in a very specific manner. Here is how:

  1. Open Mylio on a computer.
  2. Bring as many devices online as possible by opening Mylio on them while they’re on the same network.
  3. Navigate to Mylio’s Settings from the View menu.
  4. Select Advances, then toggle on Sync Panel.
  5. Open the Sync panel by selecting “Sync” from within the Details panel.
Note:  Mylio Free Users: The Sync panel can be accessed by closing the Details panel, then holding the Option key (Mac) or Alt key (Windows) while opening the Details panel. Once open, select the two arrows in the top right of the Details panel.
  6. Ensure that both the Devices and Activity sections of the Sync panel are open and visible.
  7.  With the Sync panel open, click on folders twice in the View Selector. Clicking this twice will take you to the top level of your library and ensure that nothing is selected.
  8. The Sync panel will now display information about your full library instead of a specific selection. This will tell us where your images are and where they need to go.

Understanding Life Calendar

Mylio’s Life Calendar is a unique view that displays your photos on a calendar in combination with events from your life. Events can be populated a number of ways, either manually in Mylio or from being imported directly from your digital calendars. . With a populated Life Calendar, you get more than you would with Mylio’s stock Calendar view – which simply displays your photos in chronological order.

Mylio’s Calendar view, by default, will display all of your photos based on their Date Taken metadata. This is a great way to browse through your images to find the perfect moment. However, Calendar view in conjunction with events makes locating the right photo easier than ever.

When using calendar view after you have created or imported events, Mylio displays a colored bar across the bottom of the date, showing that something important has happened in that date range. Mylio will use the rankings of your photos to create a cover that makes the event easily locatable on the calendar.

Events can also be put into categories. Each category has a different color and each event bar in your calendar will correspond to that color, making it even easier to find specific images you may be looking for.

By opening up the calendar further into month view, you can view a more detailed look at the month’s events bars and when they occurred.

Utilizing Calendar view with events makes an easily navigable Life Calendar that is a great way to keep your photos organized. Life Calendar offers an additional view and create customizations that make the creation of events, categories, and cover artwork truly one of a kind.

This option can be toggled by following these steps:

  1. Open Mylio.
  2. Select Settings from the View menu.
  3. Select General.
  4. Toggle on Confirm Drag and Drop Action.

Understanding Flutter

$

Flutter allows you to see which photos are in a folder or album and easily set the cover of that folder or album. It is also a great way to show off your photos!

When using Flutter, you will see the contents of the currently selected folder. For instance, if you have a folder called “Animals” with four folders inside of it, using Flutter on “Animals” will display the cover images of the 4 child folders, not the contents of the child folders.

Flutter on a Touch Screen Device

  1. Locate the folder or album you would like to see the images of.
  2. Swipe from right to left over the folder or album to see the contents.
  3. If you find a photo you would like to use as a cover photo, tap the pin icon that appears on the photo.

Flutter on a Computer

  1. Locate the folder or album you would like to see the images of.
  2. Hold the Shift key on the keyboard.
  3. Scroll up with your mouse hovered on the folder or album.
  4. If you find a photo you would like to use as a cover photo, click the pin icon that appears on the photo.

Understanding Folder View

$
0
0

What Are Folders?

Folders are one of the primary means of organization in Mylio. Folders allow you to directly manipulate your files inside and outside of Mylio so that the changes you make are not Mylio specific. Depending on your setup your Folder view may vary in its organization.

Mylio Pictures Folder

Each Mylio Library comes with one folder: the Mylio Pictures folder. This folder is designed to hold all of the images that are copied into Mylio if there is no other destination being utilized. For instance, photos that you have imported using the Copy command will be copied into the Mylio Pictures folder. This is because Mylio is now referencing an original file exclusive to Mylio.

The Mylio Pictures folder will also hold your iOS Camera Roll(s) and Android Media Library photos.

Mylio Pictures is where most photos will be stored if you are using Mylio as a standalone photo organization application.

Creating New Folders

New folders can be created anytime from Folder view in the View Selector.

  • In Folder view, navigate to where you would like to place your new folder.
  • Select the plus sign in the Quick Actions Bar and give the new folder a name.

  • Photos can now be dragged into this folder freely or by using Mylio Clipboard.
  • Remember that any changes made to your files will be reflected by the operating system.

Source Folders

When photos live outside of Mylio Pictures, it means that are being referenced from another location. This means that a Source Folder will live outside, but next to, the Mylio Pictures folder. This makes it easy to see when you are manipulating original images that are not Mylio exclusive. Be careful with these folders as any changes made to them will be made to the original files as well.

Syncing Source Folders from Another Computer

Mylio is in charge of protecting your photos that have been added to Source Folders on one machine and had their Originals synced to another Vault. Because of this, Original photos are stored in the Mylio folder on your secondary device.

For example:

  1. Computer A has images in a source folder that Mylio is referencing.
  2. Computer B is a Vault and wants to protect those images, so Originals are syncing.
  3. Computer A has the photos in the original location.
  4. Computer B has the photos in the Mylio root folder.

Further Investigation

Because Mylio is directly related to the file system, it is easy to see exactly where your photos live on your computer. By right-clicking on any folder and selecting Show in Finder or Show in File Explorer you will be taken to the selected folder’s location on your computer.

The Mylio Pictures folder will be saved within the Mylio Library, which can be stored in a unique location when starting Mylio for the first time, or moved later by simply moving the Mylio root directory from its original location to a new location (the next time Mylio is launched it will ask you to identify the new location of your directory).

Mylio can allow you to duplicate an image with just a few clicks. This may be to have an edited version of a photo and an unedited version or to sort them differently in Folder view. By quickly and easily duplicating your photos within Mylio you can easily maintain the integrity of your originals.

  1. Open Mylio and locate the image or set of images you wish to duplicate.
  2. Select the images so that they are outlined in blue. You can select multiple images by holding the Control key (Mac) or the Option key (Windows) while clicking.
  3. Select the Actions menu from the bottom of the Quick Actions Bar.

Upgrading your library to Mylio 3.4 Facial Recognition

$
0
0

When upgrading to version 3.4 or later from version 3.3 or earlier, Mylio needs to rescan all faces in the catalog. This is due to a new facial recognition software to enhance Mylio’s abilities to match and recognize people in your library. This can take a second or so per image meaning the larger your library, the longer this may take to complete.

Some things to note while this upgrade is ongoing:

  • Multiple devices can work in concert to complete the upgrade more quickly. Opening an updated version of Mylio on other devices and allowing them to sync with each other can assist this process in finishing faster.
  • Only faces in the upgraded library are visible in batch tagging. Until the upgrade is complete, suggestions may be reduced in this feature and in suggestions for auto-face tagging.
  • The upgrade progress can be seen in the progress dialog by selecting the Activity circle in the top right.

Importing Photos From iOS Camera Roll

$
0
0

When first logging into Mylio on your iOS device (iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch), you will be asked if you would like to import your device’s Camera Roll. The Camera Roll includes any photos that you have taken with your iOS device, or any photo manually loaded to your iOS device using iTunes on a computer.

Warning:  Mylio is not currently compatible with iCloud Photo Library if your library is being optimized by iCloud. To learn more click here.

Importing Camera Roll

If during setup you asked Mylio to not import your Camera Roll, you can add it at any time with these steps:

  1. Open Mylio on your iOS device
  2. Select the View menu (three vertical dots in the top right)
  3. Select Settings
  4. Tap Import
  5. Tap Add Camera Roll
  6. Mylio will automatically create a folder for your iOS device within the Mylio Pictures folder called “Your_Device’s_Name’s iOS Library”

Mylio’s Relationship with the Camera Roll

Mylio has a unique relationship with your device’s Camera Roll in order to ensure your photos are safe inside and outside of your Mylio Library. In general, Mylio has read-only access to your Camera Roll. Here are the guidelines for how Mylio and your Camera
Roll communicate:

  • When importing your photos, Mylio references the original images. It does not duplicate the image.
  • When importing, Mylio will make a Mylio-specific Thumbnail or Preview, depending on your setup.
  • If a photo is deleted from the Camera Roll before Mylio is opened, the photo will not be imported.
  • If a photo taken with your iOS device is deleted from Mylio, it will not delete from the Camera Roll but will be deleted from within Mylio on all other devices.
  • If a photo is deleted from the Camera Roll after being imported but before the Original has synced to another device, only the Mylio-specific Thumbnail or Preview will remain as Mylio is simply referencing on the original file.
  • If a photo is deleted from the Camera Roll after being imported and after syncing the original to another device, only the Mylio-specific Thumbnail or Preview will remain on the iOS device, but the Original will remain in the synced location.

Stopping Import from the Camera Roll

If you have previously imported photos from your device’s Camera Roll but would like to prohibit Mylio from importing photos in the future, follow these steps:

  1. Outside of Mylio, navigate to Settings > Privacy > Photos.
  2. Locate Mylio in the list of applications that have access to your photos.
  3. Turn off Mylio’s photo access.

New photos taken with your device will no longer be imported into Mylio, but your original folder and photos will remain within Mylio.

Troubleshooting: HEIF and HEVF (Apple’s High Efficiency Formats)

$

Mylio supports the importing and syncing of Apple’s High-Efficiency Image Files (HEIF) and High-Efficiency Video Files (HEVF) on iOS devices that are running iOS11 and Mylio 2.4 (4212) and newer as well as Mac computers running High Sierra (10.13) and Mylio 2.4 (4212) and newer.

If photos or videos were taken on an iOS device in HEIF/HEVF before this image type was supported by Mylio, you may need to have Mylio rescan your Camera Roll so that the images import.

Rescanning Camera Roll for HEIF or HEVF Files

  1. Open Mylio on your iOS device.
  2. Select Help from the Navigation panel.
  3. Select Console.
  4. Within the console, type clearignorelist and press Enter.
  5. Close the Mylio application on your iOS device.
  6. Open the camera and take a photo.
  7. Open Mylio. The HEIF and HEVF files will re-import along with the newly taken photo.

Importing HEIF and HEVF on Non-Apple

Apple’s HEIF and HEVF are able to be decoded by Mylio on iOS and Mac devices (iOS11+ and High Sierra (10.13+) only. If HEIF or HEVF files are imported directly to Mylio on a Windows computer or Android platform, the image will appear as an unsupported format (prohibitory symbol).

However, since iOS and Mac devices are able to decode these formats, simply allowing your devices to sync to a supported iOS or Mac device will allow Mylio to generate Thumbnails and Previews for these images and properly display them on non-iOS devices.

You may also rely on third-party codecs that can be installed for Windows devices to decode the images or videos as well.
Here are two HEIC (for photos) and HEVF (for videos) codecs that are needed for these formats to work with Windows:
HEIC – https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/heif-image-extensions/9pmmsr1cgpwg?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

HEVF – https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/hevc-video-extensions-from-device-manufacturer/9n4wgh0z6vhq

Changing High-Efficiency format to JPG

In some cases, you may wish to stop using Apple’s high-efficiency format in order to keep your images fully compatible with all of your devices. You can easily revert your photo type back to industry standard JPEGs by following these steps:

  1. On your iOS device, go to the Settings app.
  2. Select Camera.
  3. Select Format.
  4. Select Most Compatible.

  • Minimum Free Space – Set the space threshold that Mylio is allowed to work within. Setting this number means that Mylio will stop syncing if you have less than this space available on your machine. Mylio can manage this setting for you or you can turn off “Automatically Manage” to adjust the slider yourself.

Note:  It is not possible to set Mylio’s minimum free space to be less than 1GB due to performance reasons.
  • Vault Migration – Mylio will walk you through the steps of transferring a Vault that may be low on storage to a higher storage device.
  • Device Sync Policy Settings – View and change what quality images are synced to your device.
    • Simple – Choose between Mylio’s Auto-optimized and Vault settings.
    • Advanced – Specify which version of your photos sync to your devices. Click here to learn more.
    • Keep documents/videos smaller than – Mylio does not make Preview quality versions of documents and videos. The Originals are either synced to your device or not.  Use the slider to set specific file size limits, All, or None.

  • Reset Device Quality – Resets all files to either Thumbnails or Auto-optimized (whichever is selected at the top when this button is clicked). This may cause some files to be cached and/or removed from a device if it becomes low on storage.

Creating, Editing, and Viewing Events

Events in Mylio are based on a designated date or range of dates. By creating an event, you are telling Mylio that all photos from the specific date(s) can be grouped together. Creating an event does not alter or move your photos from their original location, albums, or folder views in any way. Creating an event also does not duplicate your photos, taking up any additional space.

This article will cover creating, editing, and viewing events in Calendar view.

Creating Events from Calendar View

Creating Events Automatically

Mylio can automatically create events by linking your digital calendars. To easily create events in Mylio, please see this article.

Creating Events Manually

  1. Open Calendar view by selecting Calendar in the view selector.
  2. Locate and select the day, month, or year you wish to add an event to. It should be highlighted in blue.
  3. Open the Info section of the Details panel.
  4. Select the plus sign in the Info section of the Details panel, next to “EVENTS” to begin creating a new event.
  5. The event creation dialog box will open. Here you can add:
    1. Title – the name of your event as displayed in calendar and event view.
    2. Category – which category this event belongs to.
    3. From / To – the date (or range of dates) that this event took place.
    4. Description – a description of the event.
  6. Select Save to save and create the event.
  7. Mylio will display the bar for your event across your date range, displaying the event name, length, and category.

Creating Events from Folder View

Creating Events from Folder View
Quickly populate your Life Calendar™ by using the “Show Folder as Calendar Event” toggle on a selected folder to automatically create an Event in your calendar containing that folder’s images.
Under the toggle you can add:
  1. Event – the name of your event to be displayed.
  2. Description – a description of the event.
  3. Priority – have the cover of this folder display as the event cover over other events of the same Year, Month, or Day in Calendar view.
  4. Category – add which category or type of calendar this event belongs to.
Using filter lock

To filter what appears in the Event from the toggle folder:

  1. Open the folder and set a Filter using the Filter Bar.
  2. Once the filter is applied, toggle on “Filter Lock” by clicking the Lock to the right.
  3. Navigate to Calendar view and verify the event creation and/or filter.

Editing Events

Once an event has been created, you can edit its details at any time. Here is how:

Editing Events from Calendar View

  1. Select Calendar from the View selector to open Calendar view.
  2. Open the Info section of the Details panel.
  3. Select the day, month, or year that contains the event that you wish to edit.
  4. Mylio will display all events for the selected date range in the Info section of the Details panel. Select the event you wish to edit.
  5. Select Edit Event from the dialog.
  6. Within the Event dialog you can edit the event’s title, category, relevant dates, and description.

Viewing Events

Viewing the events that you have created is easy in Calendar view.

Viewing Events from Calendar View

  1. Select Calendar from the View Selector to open the calendar.
  2. Locate the date that contains the event you wish to view.
