When opening Mylio for the first time on a computer, you will be guided through setting up the application. The Mylio setup wizard can help you ensure that Mylio is properly configured.
Signing In
To get started with the Mylio setup wizard, be sure you have signed in to Mylio using your Mylio username and password or via the third-party options below the Continue button.
If you are experiencing issues signing in to Mylio you can reset your password by clicking “Forgot Password?” above the continue button. You can also use the gear icon at the top-right to manage your account and visit the support options to reset your device or contact Mylio Support.
Once signed in, the setup wizard will begin…
First Steps
Immediately after signing in, you will have an opportunity to enter a promo code from purchasing an eligible Seagate external hard drive. If you do not have a code or your account is not eligible for the promotion, you can skip this step.
If you’re an existing Mylio user, you will be asked if this is a new device or replacing an old device. This information lets Mylio know if your newly signed-in device should replace a one on your account or not. For instance, if you’ve upgraded your iPhone and will no longer be using your old iPhone with Mylio, select “Replacing old device”. If you’ve purchased a new computer and will use both the new computer and old computer, select “New device”. If you are not sure, it is best to just select “New device” and remove your old ones from the account later.
Build Your Mylio Library
After you sign in, you are asked if you want to Add Files to your library or to skip importing. If you are setting up a new device and just need to sync your library from another device you can Skip. On the next screen to after clicking Add Files you will be presented with a few options outlined in the tabs below.
This Device
Adding Photos From Your Computer
Mylio will display the option to scan and drives in your computer or let you manually choose your folder to add. By selecting the “BEGIN” button in the center, Mylio will search the selected drive(s) for any folder containing media that can be imported. You can then select which of these you would like to see in Mylio. By selecting “Manually Locate Files”, Mylio will open a file browser and let you point to a specific folder to add.
Once you have selected the Folder(s) to add, you can complete your setup with a confirmation screen explaining how many files and folders will be added into your Mylio library.
External Drive
Adding Photos From an External Drive
Once you have selected that you would like to add photos, videos, and files from an external drive, Mylio will display a list of drives that are currently attached to your machine. If the correct drive is not seen, be sure to plug it in now, select it from the list, and click the “BEGIN” button in the middle of the screen. Mylio will scan the selected drive and show you what folders on the drive it detected with media it can import.
You have two options when adding information from an external drive:
- Leave my files where they are – this option will add the photos on the external drive to Mylio without having to copy the original files off the drive. This option is ideal for drives that are still in use and plugged in with semi-regularity.
- Copy my files from somewhere else – this option will copy the data from the external drive to a destination of your choosing. This is a great option if you have one or more external drives and you’re trying to consolidate to one larger drive or one computer.

If you choose to copy your files, Mylio will ask you where you want the files to go. Select between copying the files to a second external drive, to your computer’s internal drive, or a cloud service. You can alternatively choose to “add a device to store originals later”. This will temporarily copy the photos to your computer until a device on the account that is set to store all the Originals (a Vault). See this article to learn more about syncing and Vaults.
Online Account
Adding Photos From an Online Account
If your photos are stored in an online account like Google Photos, Facebook, or Flickr, Mylio can download them and add them to your library. Once you have selected Online Services as your source, choose which service you would like to add to Mylio and sign in.
Once signed in, Mylio will display what albums are available to download from Google, Facebook, or Flickr. Select your desired albums and press “Continue”.
Mylio will ask you where you want the files to go. Select between copying the files to an external drive, to your computer’s internal drive, or a cloud service. You can alternatively choose to “add a device to store originals later”. This will temporarily copy the photos to your computer until a device on the account that is set to store all the Originals (a Vault). See this article to learn more about syncing and Vaults.
You will be presented with a confirmation screen to verify your setup. Click Confirm Setup to continue to the last part of the setup wizard or start over.
Complete your Setup
After finalizing your import options, or skipping. You are at the final screen of the Setup Wizard. Use this screen to name your device and complete optional objectives like connecting already organized calendars so Mylio can display your photos into events. When you’re ready, select “Take the tour” to get an overview of naviagting around Mylio’s UI or Complete Setup to start using the app.
Advanced Options
After selecting what you would like to be imported into Mylio, you’ll be given the chance to explore some of Mylio’s advanced options. These include:
- Location of the Mylio Folder – this option allows you to store the location of your Mylio directory which will hold your Original images as well as optimized images. This can be moved anywhere but should remain on an internal drive.
- Advanced Device Policy – these options allow you to select your device’s Sync Policy on a more granular level. By selecting “Advanced” you can tell Mylio to specifically choose Thumbnails, Previews, or Originals instead of allowing Mylio to decide the best photo quality for you. You can also turn on Selective Sync for remote File and Folder Sync Policy control if desired.
